Days after endorsing Buhari, another faction of SDP declares for Atiku Abubakar
A faction of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) loyal to Professor Jerry Gana endorses Atiku Abubakar - The faction also suspends Professor Tunde Adeniran and Alhaji Shehu Gabam who endorsed Muhammadu Buhari - The SDP approved Supo Sonibare as the party's acting national chairman A faction of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) loyal to Professor Jerry Gana, one of those who batted for its presidential flag, has endorsed the candidature of Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2019 election.
This is coming days after a faction of the party endorsed President Muhammadu Buhari of the All progressives Congress (APC) with Donald Duke protesting that he remains the presidential candidate of the party in crisis. Legit.ng learnt that the party’s faction loyal to Gana also announced the suspension of its acting national chairman, Professor Tunde Adeniran and Alhaji Shehu Gabam, the national secretary and vice presidential candidate respectively.
The party’s faction also approved Supo Sonibare, who was the former national vice chairman (south west) as the acting national chairman. The Nigerian Tribune reports that the endorsement of Atiku was decided on at the meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).
The communiqué released after the meeting reads in parts, “This directive is premised on the Alhaji Atiku Abubakar acceptance of the template for fiscal and political restructuring to devolve to the states all functions of government that are not the exclusive prerogative of obligations under international treaties or common services of states , and on assurance that Atiku will be able to effectively address the economic security and political challenges facing the polity.” The party asked all its loyal members across the nation to vote for Atiku. Legit.ng earlier reported that the SDP, on Thursday, February 7, adopted the presidential candidature of Muhammadu Buhari ahead of February 16 presidential poll.
The National Executive Council (NEC) of the party, however, explained that the adoption did not portend merger with the APC. This is even as the NEC suspended its national publicity secretary, Alfa Muhammad, for indulging in anti-party activities.
