Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo and two of the state governors participating in the March 23 governorship supplementary elections held a meeting on Thursday in Abuja.

The governors were those of Adamawa State, Jibrilla Bindow, and  Bauchi State, Mr Mohammed Abubakar.

The closed-door meeting, which took place at the Presidential Villa, ended at about 2pm.

Findings indicated that the meeting’s agenda included the supplementary elections and strategies to deploy to achieve success for the All Progressives Congress’ incumbent governors facing the likelihood of losing re-elections next week.

However, neither the Presidency nor the governors spoke officially on the purpose of the meeting.

Bindow and Abubakar were separately approached for an interview by State House correspondents after the meeting, but they refused to talk to the journalists.

Recall that the Independent National Electoral Commission had declared the March 9 governorship election in Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Kano, Plateau and Sokoto states “inconclusive”, and ordered a re-run in the affected polling units in the six states to determine final winners.

In many of the affected states, the candidates of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party were leading in the results so far announced up to the time of taking a decision on the re-rerun.

Recall that earlier on Tuesday, President Muhammadu Buhari held a similar closed-door meeting with seven APC state governors.

Like Thursday’s meeting, the supplementary poll was said to be part of the agenda, though some presidential sources claimed that the seven governors “merely visited Mr President to congratulate him on his recent victory at the polls.”

The governors who met with Buhari were Yahaya Bello (Kogi State); Nasir el-Rufai (Kaduna State); Atiku Bagudu (Kebbi State); Abdulaziz Yari (Zamfara State); Abubakar Badaru, (Jigawa State); Kassim Shetima (Borno State); and Fayemi Kayode (Ekiti State).
