How expensive is the day-to-day life in California?
I get up in the morning, do the dishes, and take a shower. My water bill is $80/month. That's about $2/day for water.
I get into my car and drive to the gas station. I'm No fool, therefore I assumed the Liberal Spending Policies and Regulations would always mean high prices at the pump, so I bought a plug-in hybrid. Its supposed to get 30 all electric miles, but California's hot so I run my A/C. Realistically, I get about 15 miles before it kicks into hybrid mode. On average I only fill up once a week. At $3.85/gallon a fill up costs me $40. That's $160/month. Or $5.30/day.
My work truck, however is a diesel super duty. I drive it to the site and park it. Can't afford the gas otherwise. Even with that small amount of driving I fill the truck up once a month. Costs me $150. Daily that comes to $5.
I own two houses. One is paid off, but my property tax is about $4500/year. Thats about $12/day.
The other house isn't paid off. I bought it on a shirt sake during the recession, however. Got a great deal at 3.25% fixed. Only $1000/month including escrow for taxes and insurance. That's only $33/day. However, prices gave skyrocketed since then, so expect to pay at least four times that amount.
I got a great rate in my house, but my car is another story. Whatever I save in gas I give to my car loan. $10/day.
Food. I eat organic. I can't afford to, but I justify it by saying that these days I can't afford not to. I'm not the best cook, so sometimes I have to prepare a meal twice. (I forget to remove items from the oven and they burn every now and then.) It runs me about $15/day.
I don't go out very often, but when I do I don't curb my spending. You only live e once, right? I estimate my willy nilly-ness cost me about $25/day.
Electricity averages $125/month. I'm good with my conservation. Plus, I travel for work. That's $4.16 daily to PG&E.
Cell phone comes to $2 a day. Internet included in that bill.
I don't watch TV. Prefer to read (and Quora). So no cost there.
2+5.30+5+12+33+10+15+25+4.16+2=$113.46 a day to live in California.
BUT…Im lucky and that is only the bare minimum. I didn't include health insurance. I don't have kids. I'm not accounting for incidentals and upkeep. Plus, you will never get a house for the price I paid for mine.
So I'm going to inflate my amount by 4x to account for family and the inflated housing market.
I don't think many people could live comfortably on less than $400/day here in the Bay Area. Its the housing market that will be the biggest burden on most people.
Do you find Canadian or US border agents more rude? Why?
