My name is Uchenna, family and friends shortened it to Uche. I'm from Imo State but I was born and bred in Aba, Abia State.
My dad was still a student when he got my mum pregnant and as abortion wasn't really an option then, they had me. Twelve years later, they got married and had two other girls.
I was a final year Business Administration student of Micheal Okpara University of Agriculture in 2012 when my dad died. It was on the day of my last paper that the tragedy occurred. He was a civil servant, and he was with his other colleagues on their way back from work, when their car failed brakes and ran into a pole. The most painful part of it all was the fact my dad was the only one who died.
I had just finished my last paper and last exam as a student, with the whole excitement,we took pictures and signed on each other's shirt. It was a moment of joy that I had waited for four years, but then,my excitement couldn't last as I got a call from my mum.
I had told her to call me after my exams and congratulate me for scaling through, so I picked up the call with excitement but her voice wasn't encouraging.
Mum: Uchenna, where are you?
Like I said, they hardly call me Uchenna at home,so I sensed danger.
Me: Mummy, what is it? Hope all is well?
There was no reply from her, instead she broke into tears.
I hung up immediately and rushed to get my things. I didn't even tell my friends when I left. I knew that something was off. I boarded a bus to Aba,and while on the bus,I tried my dad's number, It wasn't reachable, I got more worried. My kid sisters were too young to own a phone so I had no one to contact at that moment. I told the driver to increase his speed that I was in a hurry and I received heavy backlashes from the other passengers. They shouldn't blame me, the uneasiness was killing me.
I got to Aba after two hours and I rushed straight to the house. From the gate I could hear people crying and shouting and my fear increased. I walked into the compound and saw my mum rolling on the floor shouting and throwing her hands in the air. Neighbors were holding and consoling her. My kid sisters rushed to me crying.
